Winsted cancels Saturday’s Pet Parade, but birthday activities are underway

WINSTED – Due to forecasts of extremely hot weather, Saturday’s Rotary/Laurel Parade Pet Parade has been cancelled. Parade organizers plan to reschedule, with more details to be announced at a later date.
However, events scheduled for Saturday as part of Winsted’s 250th birthday celebration, which includes a Family FunFest on June 5, will continue. Most events are free and families are welcome. Activities include:
10:30 a.m.: Beardsley & Memorial Library Foundation to Flood Book Presentation. Author Virginia Shultz-Charette will present her 250th anniversary commemorative book, “Winchester, Connecticut: A History from Founding to Flood,” followed by refreshments and a guided tour of the genealogy room
Noon to 1:30 p.m.: The American Museum of Tort, Main Street, will be open and free to visit. See the Flaming Rat and other exhibits. .
4:30 p.m.: Winchester Green Winchester Green W1N World Wide Special Event Station, Winsted Amateur Radio Club wireless operators joined the American Radio Relay League in 1978. They will host a special event station operating live from the Winchester Green with a special QSL card. Learn about the hobby and importance of radio operators in today’s world.
4:30 p.m.: Winchester Green Community Picnic on Winchester Green. Bring chairs and/or a blanket and a picnic. Hot dogs and burgers for the kids will be offered. Music by Anne DeMichiel. Tours of the historic church will be organised.
6:15 p.m.: Closing ceremonies will honor the founding of the city of Winchester, at Winchester Congregational Church, first established by the General Court of the Colony of Connecticut in 1768.
7:00 p.m.: Winchester Grange Dance Winchester Grange Dance, featuring dancing and fun with caller Rich Sbardella in the historic barn building.
Sunday at 9 a.m. there will be a kids’ elk fishing tournament at Tatro’s Pond until 1 p.m. Registration begins at 7:30 a.m.
