
Midrand Karate Academy has opened its doors to anyone willing to learn this well-known form of self-defense.
Sensei Sergio Ferreira said he coaches children and adults on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 4:30 p.m., with the senior class starting at 6:30 p.m.
He said karate had its roots in Okinawa, Japan, where it was used as self-defense and was later introduced all over Japan where it was even taught in universities and the military.
“I use the same principles of self-defense that were taught all those years ago in Okinawa. Karate has no age limit because masters in Japan are still practicing at the age of 90. It so it’s never too late to start,” said Ferreira.
Last year, the academy awarded five black belts to its talented students.
The academy was founded by sensei Alfredo Ruocchio about 10 years ago. “Unfortunately sensei Alfredo Ruocchio and his family immigrated to Ireland at which time I took over. proud at every event.

On other days, Ferreira teaches karate at Christ Church Preparatory School and College in Noordwyk.
He said that in an effort to encourage people to take up karate, classes will be free during the month of April for any new student and so if they wanted to give it a try, then this was their opportunity to start.
The academy had its open day on March 12, and young students showed off their skills followed by seniors.
