Sharing a New Song, 80+ singers led by Donnell Patterson, features gospel, spirituals, R&B and civil rights songs in “Journey On,” songs of courage, power and freedom, at 8 p.m. Saturday, December 3 at First Parish Unitarian Universalist, 630 Mass. Ave., Arlington.
The program includes the anthem “Encourage My Soul”, contemplative jazz/gospel “Come Sunday”, pop songs with big messages: “True Colors” and “We Are”. Also enjoy the all fun doo-wop “Buttercup” and the return of the SANS Beautyshop Trio.
Assistant director Kilian Mooney will lead two songs – the lullaby-turned-civil-rights anthem “All My Trials” and Keith Hampton’s uplifting “Praise His Holy Name.”
Linda Shoemaker, former executive director of the Arlington Center for the Arts, will lead a cheerful West African train song “Akiwowo,” complete with live percussion
The program includes two original Patterson songs – “I Have A Dream”, based on the speech of the Reverend Martin Luther King Jr., and the jazzy “Sharing A New Song”.
The band will also perform Patterson’s electric version of “Lift Every Voice and Sing.”
