Basant Panchami is one of the auspicious festivals in India. Basant Panchami falls annually on the fifth day of Shukla Paksha of the Hindu month of Magha. This year, the festival is observed today, February 5th. The festival is also considered the start of preparation for Holika or Holi, which is celebrated 40 days later.
Also known as Saraswati Puja, the festival officially marks the end of winters and the beginning of spring or the harvest season. In some parts of India, devotees, especially those associated with educational institutions, worship Goddess Saraswati for music, knowledge and enlightenment. In the southern part of India, the festival is called Sri Panchami.
Devotees also wear yellow on this day and put on yellow gulal during the puja. The color yellow signifies mustard fields and the arrival of spring. People also fly kites and eat yellow food. Devotees also offer yellow fruit jujube commonly known as Ber to Goddess Saraswati.
Basant Panchami is also considered to be one of the auspicious days for getting married.
