The Burnley Municipal Choir will perform Messiah on Saturday, December 4 at St Peter’s Parish Church from 7 p.m.
Soloists include soprano Nicola Howard, mezzo Kathleen Wilkinson, tenor Nicholas Watts and bass Dean Robinson
Each of them is in high demand for their solo performances across Europe and Kathleen, who started her musical career in Burnley, now travels extensively to sing both at home and abroad, and has only returned. only recently from a concert of more than two months in Berlin.
The evening will be accompanied by the East Lancs Sinfonia, an orchestra of professional musicians who perform regularly at the highest level. Trumpet soloist Jimmy Hoyle will also contribute to the overall high level of musicality.
In the orchestral world, George Frideric Handel’s Messiah is an annual Christmas tradition just like Santa Claus and Christmas trees.
Composed in 1741, Messiah offers a three-part account consisting of the prophesied birth of Jesus Christ followed by his sacrifice for humanity and the final section is the resurrection.
The conductor for the evening is the Music Director of the Burnley Municipal Choir, Nigel Wilkinson.
Hilary Wood said: “Messiah has been played at Burnley before, but not lately.
“This concert presents a wonderful opportunity for all of us to encounter high quality musical creations at the local level.
“In a time of change and uncertainty, it is a reminder to all of us, that those things that truly improve our lives
worth hanging on, revisiting and reliving the enrichment they bring.
“As you prepare for Christmas, there is no better way to start than to ‘seize the moment’ and immerse yourself in the choir’s presentation of ‘Messiah’.
“Your preparation for Christmas could not be more complete.
