Practical lessons are important in becoming a good teacher, says Education Minister Premila Kumar.
Kumar says it’s important to have a qualification, but it’s also essential to do fieldwork in order to gain first-hand experience.
The Minister of Education says that having a teaching qualification does not make someone qualified.
“So qualifying is not just about having a degree, it also means having an internship component where a new graduate doesn’t just do a degree, let’s say pure science, and then we allow them to start teaching without having practical work. Practical work is very important. We call it an internship where students come into a classroom and they teach and they really feel what it’s like to teach in a classroom surrounded by 40 students.
The Education Ministry yesterday held discussions on the revised literacy and numeracy program for elementary schools, which will be rolled out over the next school year.
