A famous name from Pembroke Dock’s military heritage has again been ‘called in’ to help with a new recruitment drive for the Pembroke and District Male Voice Choir.
“Our choir needs YOU” is the message adapted from Field Marshal Earl Kitchener, who at the start of his military career was stationed at Pembroke Dock. A street name in the town recalls the links of this famous soldier.
The choir is holding a special recruitment evening on Tuesday April 5 at St Teilo’s Church Hall, Pembroke Dock, and is keen to welcome new members to its ranks, joining three new choristers who have arrived since the choir restarted weekly practices last autumn. A similar campaign in 2019 brought in nine new members.
Choir secretary Dean Maiden said: “This is an opportunity for men of all ages who think they have a voice but haven’t tried choral singing yet. They can learn as they go – very few of our members can read music.
At the choir’s annual meeting – appropriately held for Welsh singers on March 1 – choir members eagerly awaited a return to the stage, with several concert dates booked from April.
President John Hillier welcomed the support of all the choristers who had returned after the long hiatus due to covid restrictions, now with a new musical team made up of musical director Juliet Rossiter and accompanist Carole Rees.
Apart from concert dates beginning in April, the choir hopes to visit a West Country choir for joint concerts later in the year.
Choir president Clive Collins, who was re-elected for another three years, looked forward to attending as many concerts as possible. Other appointments were: Vice President Meurig Rees; Secretary/Treasurer Dean Maiden; assistant accompanist Alyson Griffiths; Librarian Huw Morgan; Tony Hedley Website and Social Media; social secretary Matthew John; Stage Manager and Assistant, David Halsted and David Brinn; Press Secretary John Evans.
The choir rehearses every Tuesday evening at St Teilo’s Parish Hall, Pembroke Dock, opposite the Aldi store, from 7pm.
