Everything is set for Ghana to mark Global Handwashing Day 2022, one of the biggest global events in the water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) sector, celebrated on October 15 of each year.
This year’s national event will take place this Saturday at the reconstructed Kejetia Market in Kumasi under the global theme “United for Universal Hand Hygiene”.
Market women at the modern market center in the heart of the Ashanti regional capital are expected to play a key role in the activities planned to mark the event.
The Community Water and Sanitation Agency (CWSA), the state agency under the Ministry of Sanitation and Water Resources, which leads the WASH sector for the national event, engaged the stakeholders, including market women in Kumasi, to build momentum towards another successful and meaningful national celebration. .
Theodora Adomako-Adjei, CWSA’s Extension Services Manager, is optimistic that the event will go a long way in creating much-needed awareness about effective handwashing as “the best way to prevent communicable diseases like COVID-19 taught us that.”
“Global Handwashing Day provides a platform for advocacy and action for increased access and practice of handwashing with soap under clean running water,” he said. she noted.
She described handwashing as an important exercise in ensuring good health, and “As we prepare to commemorate this year’s Global Handwashing Day, remember that handwashing with soap just isn’t for COVID-19 prevention.”
“Handwashing is important for achieving benefits beyond disease reduction. It ensures increased dignity and general well-being,” said Ms. Adomako-Adjei.
As part of the preparation for the main event, the market queens were guided by the health department of the Church of Christ in Kumasi.
Also ahead of the celebration, there will be a tippy-tap hand-washing writing and coloring contest this Friday, October 14 for school children in Kumasi metropolis.
Mrs. Adomako-Adjei expressed her gratitude to GAMA, UNICEF, Church of Christ and WaterAid Ghana for supporting the event.
