CHICAGO – Welcome to the “Welcome to Flatch” recaps! In this week’s episode, “Maniflatch Destiny,” Barb takes Kelly under her wing while Cheryl’s chickens make enough eggs for everyone. Did you just start the show? Here’s our recap of the season two premiere. Ready to stuff yourself? “Welcome to Flatch” is stream on Huluand you can also watch new episodes on demand or via FOX Now.
How to solve a problem like Jaime Presslyis that Barb Flatch? The latest addition to “Welcome to Flatch” is a bit of a conundrum. With her perky blonde and edgy fashion sense, she’s a flashier character than the eccentric but unassuming denizens of our beloved town. But beneath that outgoing laugh lurks a woman humiliated by an acrimonious divorce and the dissolution of her real estate company, forced to start over in the kind of town she would normally consider unworthy of her.
If “Maniflatch Destiny” is any indicator, showrunner Jenny Bicks and co. seem to think Kelly Mallet (Holmes) is the secret sauce for integrating Barb’s over-the-top personality into the more subdued colors of the “Flatch” palette. Let’s see if it works!

Ever since Kelly took Barb’s advice and kicked Shrub (Sam Straley) out of her house Last week, the friendship of the Mallet cousins is much stronger. So hard, in fact, that Kelly and Shrub decide to steal eggs from Cheryl (Aya Cash) and the house of Egg’s Barb! Too bad Barb is home, so they’re making eggs at Father Joe’s (Sean William Scott) car instead. (He argues, naturally, choosing to compliment Kelly’s goal.)
Yet Barb’s presence has already sparked the interest (and anger) of many Flatch women. Cheryl hates the changes Barb made to their shared offices, especially the fact that she replaced all the doors with bright pink bead curtains. (They’re pretty hard to shut down in anger, for one thing.) Nadine (Taylor Ortega), meanwhile, is thrilled that a flesh-and-blood Flatch family member is back in town, since Barb is the last person she needs to complete her. (not scary at all) Flatch family furry tree. “I take consent to hair extraction very seriously,” she assures us; we’ll take your word for it, Nadine.

But it’s Kelly’s connection to Barb that forms the basis of this episode’s A-plot. Barb, presumably seeing something of herself in the ambitious but unfocused Kelly, decides to take the young Mallet under her wing and teach her how to succeed. The key, of course, is the mantra of every modern girlbo: “Manifest” – with vision boards and all. A vision board, as Kelly explains, is “like a Ouija board, but instead of sending silly ghosts to your friends, you get cool stuff you want.” And what she wants is a pontoon boat. The first step? Get an internship at Just Barb’s Realty.
For Barb, it’s mostly an excuse for someone to unpack their things and rub their feet. But Kelly takes the job like she did “EnergizeHer” MLM Last Season – she desperately searches not only for a road to success, but also for female role models she can follow. The results are mixed: Kelly’s Barb-ian combo of a floral blazer, pink track pants and hot pink heels is a see, and she makes a cute sign for Barb’s real estate business. But when she delivers the mail containing ex-Bert’s divorce papers to Barb, Kelly accidentally sends her new boss into a total meltdown.

It is here that Kelly realizes that Barb hasn’t got it all figured out; she’s a mess, collapsing in frustrated anger about the road her life has taken. This time it’s Kelly with advice — don’t hold back your anger, let him out. And Kelly and Barb do it, donating eggs to the beef jerky shack run by Barb’s former high school boyfriend. It’s a neat bonding moment for two women who find kinship in their shared ambitions, which Kelly capitalizes on well by convincing Barb to pay her minimum wage. (One step closer to that pontoon boat, baby!)

Mickey in town, Mickey in town!

As for Shrub, he has his own problems. Since he’s no longer at Kelly’s house, he stays with his romantic rival Mickey (Justin Linville), enduring the searing agony of sleeping on the same couch Mickey uses for his public access show “Mickey About Town.” It’s almost worth it since it’s near Beth (Erin Bowles), who is naturally Mickey’s most frequent/only guest. Even so, it’s enough to drive Shrub crazy.
Shrub’s main source of support is Father Joe, who decides to teach him to drive as a distraction. It’s what you’d expect, with Shrub mistakenly turning on the windshield wiper fluid and forcing Joe to scrape the door and knock off the side mirror of Cheryl’s brand new pride and joy van (which she named “Kimmie Jean”).

As with Kelly and Barb, however, the teacher soon becomes the student, as Shrub – who can drive just fine without Joe “always talking and confusing him” – goes digging in the trash cans to find new parts to fix the Cheryl’s car. A few coats of paint and a custom chicken decal later, Kimmie Jean is back to normal, and Shrub’s ingenuity leads Beth to admit on camera that he’s a “freezing fox.”

Stick to the rivers and lakes you’re used to
As usual, the most charming bits of “Flatch” are the moments when the show nods to the most eccentric secondary characters in town. Mandy (Krystal Smith) has taken it upon herself to lead Bible studies, blaming God for kicking Eve out of Eden, and kicking off a Monday Night (BYOB) singing service where attendees sing TLC’s “Chasing Waterfalls” from the benches (with guest saxophonists!).

It’s a fun, peppy little moment that serves as a nice break from the chaos of Kelly and Shrub’s respective antics. to the show as a whole. While Barb made a welcome shake-up of the cast, the show’s focus on her in these early stretches left little room for the Flatchians we know and love; Cheryl and Joe, in particular, feel stuck in a rut, like the writers aren’t quite sure what to do with them now that they’re once again a settled item. (Perhaps their story will get some much-needed new energy now that they’ve asked Shrub to move in with them.)

Hopefully we’ll get more screen time for them soon, as Barb will blend into the ensemble rather than take center stage, and Kelly and Shrub will emerge from their respective limbos and take real steps towards growing the character. At least that’s what your recap manifests for the show as the season continues.
