The Chadron State College Concert Choir and Community Choir welcome the return of Standard Time with a free concert at 3:00 p.m. at the Chadron Arts Center
Dr. Joel Schreuder leads both groups and will first have the community choir sing, then join the college choir for a pair of Scottish songs: “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose” and “Loch Lomond”.
The joint concert will be the first time for most audiences to see or hear new Chadron State sidekick Katheryn “Katie” Hughes, who took over when Bobby Pace left after 7 years to pursue a doctorate at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
Coincidentally, Hughes is from Boulder and was informed and encouraged to apply for the position at CSC by Pace. She grew up in a musically-leaning family with what she calls “an incredibly supportive church and school community.”
Hughes has a bachelor’s degree in piano performance from the University of Northern Colorado and a master’s degree in collaborative piano from the University of Cincinnati, but says becoming a professional accompanist started as a favor to her best friend.
Although she enjoys being an accompanist, Hughes is also a singer-songwriter, piano and organ soloist, arranger, musical director of musicals and flautist. She says she likes to keep busy and try new experiences.
Hughes expects to continue on the same professional path for many years.
Hughes has her own website, katiehughesmusic.com, which offers the ability to purchase several songs she has written or arranged.
