Country star Brett Eldredge has released his seventh studio album, songs about youFriday, June 17. His first album since sunday walkreleased in 2020. Although it’s been two years since we last heard from the musician, it only took Eldredge two months to craft many of the songs for his new album.
From the gospel sensation of “Holy Water” to the rock-infused “I Feel Fine,” Eldredge took the genre’s turn and ran with it. But the lyrics go beyond the various genres in many of his new songs. His track “Get Out Of My House” is worthy of dancing, but he also regenerates while singing I’d rather have peace of mind than let you stay. The song is about cleansing and transforming one’s self-esteem after a relationship ends.
The album’s opening track, “Can’t Keep Up,” is celebratory and upbeat, but what does Eldredge celebrate? While it’s easy to assume it’s about his album release, he’s actually talking about two things that depend on each other: his sanity and his confidence.
“I just got into this beat that I never found,” Eldredge told musician and Apple Music’s Kelleigh Bannen in an interview for her show, Country Radio Today. “I found a confidence, I think it was what it was”, discussing his process of writing the album.
Eldredge won the CMA Award for Best New Artist in 2014 and has had five No. 1 country hits on the Billboard charts. After his album Bring You Back (2013), he took a break from all social media platforms until his album Sunday Drive (2020). Still, it’s Songs About You that best reveals why he took the social media hiatus and what he got out of it.
“I found my sweet spot and found confidence in that, where I used to wake up every morning singing these melodies in my head, getting those lyrics in the middle of the night,” Eldredge said. “It just occurred to me and it was so strange.”
Yet it is with the help of his producers and screenwriters that he was able to entrust us songs about you. “The people I made [the album] really lifted me up to be the person and artist that I could be,” he added. “It’s all you can ask for in anything in life, it’s the people you’re with, you can trust them with all your heart.”
Eldredge believes that when you’re surrounded by people who support you and want the best for you, you can truly bring out the best in you. Because of this, he is able to recognize his confidence in his album and in himself.
