Bishop Duca: Sunday mass, church activities canceled due to Hurricane Ida

BATON ROUGE, Louisiana (BRPROUD) – Bishop Michael G. Duca issued a statement apologizing to Catholics for masses and church activities this weekend.

In anticipation of the approach of Hurricane Ida, the faithful of the diocese of Baton Rouge are exempt from the obligation to attend mass this weekend, August 28-29, 2021. The entire diocese of Baton Rouge is under hurricane alert with conditions expected to deteriorate from Saturday afternoon. Due to the possibility of destructive winds and heavy rainfall, all masses and church activities will be canceled on Sunday to protect the safety of our parishioners. Parish pastors can still celebrate a Saturday eve mass at their discretion, unless their parish is subject to a mandatory evacuation order.

In addition, the Catholic Life Center campus and all Catholic schools in the Diocese of Baton Rouge will be closed on Monday, August 30. Any other news regarding the closures will be announced as needed after the storm makes landfall. This weekend, please pray asking for the intercession of Our Lady of Prompt Help for safety during the storm and unwavering hope after it has passed. Pay attention please!
