Activities for all ages this week at the library
The Monroe County Public Library offers local residents the chance to read, learn, connect and create. The Downtown Library is located at 303 E. Kirkwood Ave. and the Ellettsville branch is at 600 W. Temperance St. All events are free. Funding for the event is provided by the Friends of the Library Foundation.
Fall holidays closing
The downtown library, Ellettsville branch and bookmobile will be closed November 25-26. You can use your library card to access eBooks, audiobooks, movies, music, and more online. Access our virtual branch at mcpl.info/digital.
Home art lab
Calling all homeschoolers! Explore different artistic mediums and express your creativity each month through unique projects. In this session, you are going to make a DIY seamless pop pie cushion! For ages 5 and up. It’s 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. Thursday in the children’s program room at the downtown library. Register at mcpl.info/calendar.
Preschool Story Time
In preschool story time, stories, songs and nursery rhymes get people talking, singing and playing with books and words. It’s 10 a.m. to 10:25 a.m. Thursday in Meeting Room B Ellettsville. For 3-6 year olds and caregivers. Register at mcpl.info/calendar.
Minecraft 3D printing
Join the Minecraft library server to build something cool! The library will take your build, turn it into a 3D model, and then print it on its 3D printer for you to keep! If you don’t have your own account, you can borrow one from the library. For 7-12 year olds. It meets virtually from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Thursday on the library’s Minecraft server. The library server uses the Java version of Minecraft. Please register with an email address at mcpl.info/calendar.
Learn to play table tennis, have fun and improve your skills in a safe and friendly environment! It is 4 p.m. to 5 p.m. Friday in meeting room 1B of the downtown library. Pass. For all ages.
Shaking Your Family Tree Genealogy Conference
Join the Monroe County History Center and Library as four experts guide you through challenges of house history, church records, beginner’s DNA results, and more. For ages 18 and over. It’s 10:15 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday at the Monroe County History Center at 202 E. Sixth St., Bloomington. Please register at monroehistory.org.
Cheap gift workshop
Learn how to make inexpensive crafts that people will actually use and love! You will leave each class with a finished sample, an instruction sheet, and a list of supplies to recreate these great gifts at home. For ages 18 and over. Saturday Cinema Marathon
Saturday is a great day to go out and watch movies with friends! For 12-19 year olds. It’s noon to 6 p.m. Saturday in the teenage space on the ground floor of the downtown library.
Do you like cute Kawaii characters? Gather your drawing supplies and join the library on Zoom for step-by-step instructions on creating cuddly themed creatures! For 7-12 year olds. QueerTalk Book Club, virtual edition
Join library staff as they create a safe space to discuss books written by and for LGBTQ + people. In November and December, you will discuss “We Do This’ Til We Free Us: Abolitionist Organizing and Transforming Justice” by Mariame Kaba. It’s 1:30 p.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday on Zoom. Preschool Mathematics and Science
Feed your child’s inner scientist! Enjoy a story followed by hands-on activities that will allow you and your child to explore math and science concepts together. For 3-6 year olds and caregivers. Maker Lab: Crayon art
Science, technology and crafts –– meet up every month for a cool project. This month, it’s the art of pencil! For 12-19 year olds. It’s 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Tuesday in the teenage space on the ground floor of the downtown library.
Prenatal yoga is a gentle exercise that responds to your body’s changing needs, builds strength, and deepens awareness of your mind, body, and connection with your baby. For pregnant adults. Families with children from infants to 3 years old can play, sing, read, and talk with other toddlers, then enjoy toy time. Friends bookstore sale
All films and music from the Friends of the Library bookstore are half price in November. The sale includes DVDs, CDs, vinyl records, cassettes and Blu-Rays. The bookstore also offers unique gifts for library supporters, including masks, t-shirts, note cards, tote bags and more. The bookstore is open Tuesday and Thursday from 11 am to 7 pm; Friday and Saturday 11 am-5pm; and Sunday from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Visit mcpl.info/bookstore for more information.
Challenge of creating a comic book
Create an original one-page comic book to share with the community and enter to win one of 20 Vintage Phoenix Comic Books gift cards. Categories are available for ages 7-11 and teens 12-19. Upload your comic to mcpl.info/comic before November 30 to enter the contest. Note: All comics should be suitable for all ages. Comics that do not follow this guideline will not be shared.
