There are stories that are sometimes so enriching and comprehensive that they cannot be completely told in one song. Fortunately, a number of acts in musical history have revisited the characters and stories of several songs. One of those groups is the young The Black Moods, who turned heads last year with their single “Sunshine” and is preparing their new album with “She Gets Out”, a song that continues a narrative.
The band tells us, “’She Gets Out’, our new single, is meant to be a continuation of the character from our last album ‘Sunshine’. In her main song, “Sunshine”, she’s someone who is struggling to find a way to change their life. With ‘She Gets Out’, she makes the decision to take a stand and own her life, no matter how frightening the consequences can be. It’s definitely a “sequel song” so we decided to share a very eclectic list of 10 “sequel songs” for Loudwire from some of our favorite musicians over the years.
Singer-guitarist Josh Kennedy and drummer Chico Diaz present their picks for the 10 best songs from the sequel below, but first, check out “Sunshine” and its new sequel “She Gets Out”. “She Gets Out” will be featured on the band’s next studio album, which is due out in Spring 2022. You can pick up the song here and stay up-to-date on the band’s tour dates and more here.

The Black Moods lyrics for “She Gets Out”
She goes out takes one last look behind her
I passed out on the couch last night, I’ll never find her
The coves of the screen door, the frost, the butterflies remind her
She has just enough for the bus, no one says goodbye to herYeah, I feel like it might be okay
There is something different about how she feels todayShe goes out it smells of summer
It’s already over
Since those days of December
She remembers he took over
How can it be so cold
She goes out it smells of summer
It’s already over
Since those days of December
She remembers he took over
How can it be so coldLA sun feels good but she starts to hate it
Walking the crowded streets feels isolated
Fed up with her job here, but at least she gets paid for it
Never think once to go back to where it came fromYeah, I feel like it might be okay
There is something different about how she feels todayShe goes out it smells of summer
It’s already over
Since those days of December
She remembers he took over
How can it be so cold
She goes out it smells of summer
It’s already over
Since those days of December
She remembers he took over
How can it be so coldSomeone is looking in my direction
Standing under the blue sky
I think I’m ready today
So as not to be invisible, not to be afraid of my nameShe goes out it smells of summer
It’s already over
Since the days of December
She remembers he took over
How can it be so cold
She goes out it smells of summer
It’s already over
Since those days of December
She remembers he took over
How could it be so
Taking on how could be so cold
