If THERE was a way to recognize the meaning of Christmas while having a little fun, then St Peter’s Anglican Church in Leeton has it covered. On December 19, the church will host a nine lesson and song festival, which originally began in 1911 at Turo Cathedral in Cornwall. “Then it got famous because it’s held at King’s College Cambridge – that’s where people really know it as it’s televised across the world every year,” said Father Robert Murphy. “So we make our own version of it.” What happens is that there are readings, there is no sermon, which is an added benefit for anyone, including the priest. IN OTHER NEWS: “The readings tell the Christmas story and we have soloists and choirs singing.” The soloists who will perform that evening will be Ruth Warren, Katie McAliece and Zoe Yalouris. St Peter’s Choir, Riverina Men’s Choir and Leeton Girls’ Choir will also perform. “It’s open to everyone … we would like to invite everyone to come,” said Father Robert. “It will be followed by the traditional Christmas carol service rate, which is fruit cake and sherry – all delivered in a COVID-friendly way of course. We have had this in the past. Last year we had a virtual service, but this year we can’t wait to get together again. The festival of nine lessons and songs will be held on December 19 from 7 pm at the church. For more information, contact the church.
